International Women’s Day Events

International Women’s Day (8th March) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. #pressforprogress

Dozens of women will be travelling to London to take part in a march and rally at Westminster to mark International Women’s Day. The event ‘March 4 Women’ has been organised by Blackburn-based charity Humraaz Support Services to celebrate the 100 year anniversary when women in the UK first gained the right to vote.A coach will be leaving Blackburn early in the morning on March 4. This trip will involve a two hour walk which will be led by Yorkshire dales millennium trust and it will give women the opportunity to get outside the Borough and experience the positive benefits of walking on mental health. 100 Years Later – a storytelling celebration of women and girls
Come to a fantastic children’s storytelling event run by Darwen Labour Party to celebrate International Women’s Day this March! It takes place in the junior library at Darwen Library on Knott Street, where storyteller Beth Guiver will be entertaining with stories and Vee McDee will be providing crafts for you to enjoy. There will be a table of suggested reading for you to browse through featuring strong female characters and authors. The library will also have two treasure trails the children can follow round the library! 11am – 1pm

Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery have commissioned 5 female artists to create art work to celebrate International Women’s day. They cover a wide range of styles, covering 100 years of suffrage from Sarah Hardacre’s piece on Blackburn Suffragettes based on research from the Cottontown archive, a portrait of Olive Morris a much forgotten Black activist from the 1960’s and 70’s by Anita George. To the modern day experience Emma Colbert a 2nd year student at Blackburn School of Art large painted piece will celebrates diversity, difference and womanhood. Whilst Blackburn artist Taylor Rianne’s photomontage ‘Insight’ is about growing up as an autistic female in the 21st century. The work will be installed across the day on Saturday 10th March as an outdoor gallery on the hoardings on Museum Street and Richmond Terrace.
