About the Event

The Longest Yarn – Britain at War is an 80-metre hand-knitted and crocheted exhibition exploring how Britain lived, worked, and endured during the Second World War.

Created by hundreds of makers, it focuses on social history rather than battles — from rationing, evacuation and women at work to the arrival of American forces. Each panel is carefully researched and interpreted in yarn, telling everyday wartime stories in an accessible, human way.

The exhibition also includes eight life-size figures, based on real people and roles, anchoring the work in lived experience. Touring cathedrals and heritage venues, Britain at War uses craft as a powerful way to connect generations, spark conversation, and remember the resilience of ordinary people.
