Blackburn and Darwen Town Halls to mark Armed Forces Day with flag-raising ceremony

Blackburn and Darwen Town Halls will both host flag-raising ceremonies next Monday, 22 June, to mark Armed Forces Day.

Blackburn with Darwen will join over 400 councils nationwide at 11am to raise ceremonial flags in support of the Armed Forces.

Residents from across the borough are invited to gather outside Blackburn and Darwen town halls from 10.50am ahead of the ceremonies and two minutes’ silence at both locations at 11am.

At Blackburn Town Hall, the Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen will be present with the Mayoress, the Chief Executive, Council Leader, councillors, Deputy Lieutenant, and representatives from the uniformed services, military organisations and veterans.

At Darwen Town Hall, the Deputy Mayor will be present with the Deputy Mayoress, the Deputy Chief Executive, Deputy Leaders, Deputy Lieutenant, councillors, uniformed services, military organisations and veterans. MP for Darwen and Rossendale Andy McNae will also attend.

Flags will be raised by uniformed flag party personnel.

Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen Councillor Mahfooz Hussain said: “I am honoured to be in attendance as the Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen to mark this important occasion. Setting aside this time in our calendars provides a moment of reflection to give thanks and pay respects to our veterans, the men and women currently serving and their families.

“It shows our recognition and unwavering support for their dedication, service and sacrifice both past and present, and everyone is welcome to join us.”

Monday’s ceremonies come ahead of National Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27 June.
