Whalley Old Road full closure & improvement works

Blackburn Life

Blackburn with Darwen Council, as reported by The Shuttle, says residents and motorists are being advised of planned highway improvements on Whalley Old Road, a busy route in Blackburn.

The works, on a stretch managed by Blackburn with Darwen Council, include a new roundabout and parallel crossing. Temporary traffic lights are scheduled from Monday, October 5 to Sunday, November 15 to allow the work to progress safely.

Whalley Old Road is then scheduled to be fully closed to traffic from the top of the Sunnybower area from Monday, November 16 to Friday, January 29, 2027, while the next stage of the works takes place. A clearly signed diversion will be in place, and access to residential properties and Stonehill Nurseries and Garden Centre will be maintained throughout.

The Council says emergency services have been notified and that people will be kept updated as work continues. A spokesperson said: “two-way traffic lights will be needed from October 5, followed by a full road closure from November 16.”

The spokesperson also said: “we’re giving residents, businesses and visitors advance notice to help them plan ahead.”

In the same update, the Council said the project is part of a record £15m being invested in improving roads in the borough.

The spokesperson said: “We’re investing more in highway improvements this year than we’ve ever been able to before, with a record £15m committed.”

They added: “We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused, but these are important improvements”.
