The event, held on 28th April 2025, was organised by UNISON Blackburn with Darwen Local Government Branch in collaboration with the Blackburn and District Trades Union Council.
Thanks were extended to the speakers, who spoke passionately about the importance of continuing the fight for safer workplaces and recognising those who have been killed, injured, or made ill through work.
The branch is now encouraging more members to get involved and consider becoming Health and Safety Representatives, vital roles that help ensure protection and support for workers in every sector. Those interested are invited to get in touch via unisonbranch@blackburn.gov.uk.
As part of the commemoration, attendees also reflected on the significance of the Workers’ Memorial Day plaque on Northgate, which serves as a permanent reminder of the borough’s commitment to improving workplace safety. The plaque bears the international message of the campaign: “Remember the dead, fight for the living.”
About Workers’ Memorial Day
Workers’ Memorial Day is held annually on 28th April around the world. It is a day to honour those who have lost their lives or suffered injuries due to unsafe working conditions, while renewing efforts to ensure better protections for today’s workforce.
Originating in the 1970s and formally recognised by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in 2001, the day is supported in the UK by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and countless unions nationwide.
