From Injury to Triumph: Blackburn Runner Completes First Marathon on Her Birthday

Introduction

Blackburn Road Runners’ Lynne Knowles had more than one reason to celebrate last weekend — not only was it her birthday, but she also completed her first-ever marathon at the Manchester Marathon, overcoming a major injury along the way.

Lynne’s story is one of resilience, determination, and community spirit. After suffering a severe broken ankle just a few years ago, completing a marathon seemed out of reach. But through steady recovery and sheer grit, she crossed the finish line in front of cheering crowds.

Describing the moment, Lynne said:

“A birthday to remember 💙🏃‍♀️🏅 My first marathon — I’m not going to lie, it wasn’t easy. The heat made it difficult, but I listened to my body, took it steady and tried to enjoy it… which I did!”

She also paid tribute to the support she received on the day, adding:

“Amazing support all the way around and the finish line was unbelievable. Time was irrelevant — it was all about getting round, stopping and chatting to my lovely supporters on the route. Thank you for being there, it really gave me a boost.”

Lynne also thanked Coach Cox for sharing messages of support at the start line, admitting they brought her to tears.

“I’m still shocked that I did it,” she said. “But it just proves that with some determination (or stubbornness in my case), you can achieve your dreams — and I’m so proud that I have.”

The Blackburn Road Runners described her effort as inspirational, sharing how proud they are of her incredible achievement:
“The road to recovery is long and winding… she got to the end. How wonderful. #BRRMegaProud”

Congratulations, Lynne — a true example of the power of perseverance.
