The people of Blackburn have spoken — and they want to see Corporation Park’s Conservatory brought back to life.

A comprehensive community survey has garnered over 1,500 responses, conveying a clear message that residents view the Victorian landmark as a vital part of the town’s heritage.

Nearly 9 out of 10 people who took part said the Conservatory is “very important” to the character of the park, while most admitted they would visit the park more often if it were to reopen.

Top choice: plants, wellbeing and a butterfly house

The single most popular suggestion was to restore the Conservatory to its original role as a botanical space — complete with exotic plants, a butterfly house and areas for wellbeing and relaxation. More than 390 people put forward ideas in this category, making it the standout favourite.

Other popular options included:

  • Turning it into a café or restaurant (265 suggestions)
  • Education and community uses (234 suggestions)
  • A wedding and events venue (143 suggestions)

For many, though, the Conservatory is about memories — from childhood visits to admiring its architecture — and people want those experiences available for future generations.

What happens next

The council, working with Historic England and Buttress Architects, is now drawing up three design options based on the feedback. These will be shared with the public later this year before a bid is made to the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Councillor Jim Smith said the response was “hugely encouraging”, adding:

“We’re putting our all into bringing the building back into use, and it’s heartening to see the public with us on the journey.”

Your say

So, should the Conservatory return to its botanical roots, become a buzzing café, or host weddings and events?
