£2 bus fare cap welcomed as boost for Lancashire travellers and jobs

The Government’s decision to cut the bus fare cap to £2 from January 2027 has been welcomed in Lancashire, with Blackburn with Darwen Council leader Phil Riley saying it will help people reach jobs, education and essential services.

Councillor Phil Riley, who is also Chair of the Lancashire Combined County Authority’s Transport Committee, said the lower cap would support economic growth across the county.

The Government says the measure will help millions of passengers access more affordable travel and support journeys for work, education, healthcare and leisure.

The announcement will reduce the current £3 fare cap to £2 throughout 2027, helping to make public transport more affordable for people who rely on buses every day.

Government figures suggest previous fare caps increased bus travel and improved access to opportunities, particularly for people travelling to employment, education and training.

Councillor Phil Riley said: “The £2 fare cap is great news for residents across Lancashire. Affordable bus travel helps people get to work, education, healthcare and other essential services.

“Good transport is key to economic growth. Cheaper fares will help households with the cost of living, support our town centres and make it easier for people to access opportunities.

“We will continue working with Government and transport partners to improve services, strengthen connections and deliver a public transport network that works for Lancashire residents and businesses.”

The Lancashire Combined County Authority has identified transport and connectivity as key enablers of economic growth, helping residents access employment, skills and training opportunities while supporting businesses to recruit and expand.
