Blackburn Empire Theatre pays tribute to patron and dear friend Jimmy Cricket

The much-loved comedian, performer and long-standing supporter has died aged 80

Blackburn Empire Theatre has paid tribute to its much-loved patron and dear friend, Jimmy Cricket, following the news of his death.

Jimmy, whose real name was James Mulgrew, had been a proud patron of the volunteer-run theatre for many years, but his relationship with the Empire extended far beyond a ceremonial title. He became one of its greatest champions, a regular performer on its stage and a generous supporter who helped raise vital funds to secure the theatre’s future.

Throughout the years, Jimmy returned to Blackburn on numerous occasions, delighting audiences with his unmistakable blend of warmth, gentle humour and family-friendly comedy. Off stage, he was equally admired for the kindness and encouragement he showed to the volunteers who keep the historic theatre alive.

Speaking about Blackburn Empire Theatre, Jimmy once said:

“This is such a great little theatre which means so much to the community. It has got a great reputation among the artists who have performed here because everyone is so friendly.”

Those words became especially meaningful to everyone connected with the Empire, reflecting not only Jimmy’s affection for the venue but also the welcoming spirit that he himself embodied throughout his remarkable career.

Jimmy first found national fame after winning LWT’s Search for a Star, before going on to front his own television series, And There’s More. Over the decades he became one of Britain’s best-loved comedians, appearing on television, radio and stages across the UK, while remaining true to the gentle, uplifting style of comedy that made him so popular with generations of audiences.

Behind the famous wellington boots and unforgettable catchphrases was a man widely respected for his generosity, humility and genuine warmth.

In a statement, Blackburn Empire Theatre said:

“Jimmy wasn’t simply our patron. He was one of our greatest champions, a generous supporter and a valued friend who genuinely understood what our theatre means to its volunteers, audiences and the wider community.

“He performed at the Empire on many occasions and also helped us raise vital funds, supporting our work and helping to ensure that the theatre could continue entertaining the community he cared so deeply about.

“We feel enormously privileged that Jimmy chose to support Blackburn Empire Theatre and proud that he became such an important part of our theatre family.”

The theatre has extended its condolences to Jimmy’s wife May, his children, grandchildren, wider family and his many friends.

Ending its tribute with one of Jimmy’s best-loved catchphrases, the theatre added:

“We would normally say that this is the end of the story.

“But Jimmy would probably stop us there and say: ‘Come here – there’s more!’

“And thanks to the laughter, memories and happiness he leaves behind, there always will be.”
