Generous Donation Revives Darwen’s St John Ambulance Station and Supports Local Brass Band

Darwen’s St John Ambulance station is set for a grand revival thanks to a generous donation that has provided the charity with a new home – completely free of charge. The building on George Street, now known as the Brass and Bandage Station, will also serve as the new home for Darwen Brass Band, offering both organisations a fresh start after the challenges of recent years.

The station, which had been empty since the pandemic, is being transformed by volunteers from both St John Ambulance and Darwen Brass Band. With the grand opening set for November 2, the community is invited to come along and check out the new facilities, learn some first aid, or simply enjoy a performance by the band.

Adam Brogden, County President for St John Ambulance, expressed his gratitude, saying, “We are absolutely overwhelmed by this generosity. The building was in disrepair, and mounting costs meant we had to close before the pandemic. Now, thanks to the kindness of a generous supporter and the Council, we’re back and ready to build a thriving unit once again.”

Darwen Brass Band, which has nearly 40 members, also faced the need for a new home. Chair Mandy Pickles called the opportunity “a lifeline,” ensuring the band’s future. The band is planning concerts at their new base, including one to raise funds for St John Ambulance, and hopes to set up a community training band in the near future.

Darwen-based Crown Paints kindly donated paint for the building’s renovation, with volunteers hard at work preparing for the November opening.

The event will take place from 11am to 3pm on Saturday, 2nd November, offering the community a chance to see the new space and learn more about both St John Ambulance and Darwen Brass Band.
