Phil Riley backs Blackpool’s bid for UK City of Culture 2029

Blackburn with Darwen Council Leader Cllr Phil Riley has backed Blackpool’s bid to become UK City of Culture 2029, saying success would be good news for Lancashire and communities across the county.

Blackpool is one of just nine places shortlisted for the title, which celebrates culture, creativity and community. If successful, the town would receive £10 million in Government funding to help deliver a year-long programme of cultural events and activities in 2029.

The bid is being led by Blackpool Council, a partner in the Lancashire Combined County Authority, and has support from across Lancashire. Although Blackpool is the name on the bid, backers say the benefits would be felt across the county.

Blackpool’s vision for 2029 focuses on the area’s mix of entertainment, heritage, creativity and community spirit. Organisers say the title would shine a national spotlight on the talent, imagination and resilience already in the region, while leaving a lasting cultural legacy.

Cllr Phil Riley said: “This is good news for Blackpool and good news for Lancashire.

“If Blackpool is successful, it will bring more visitors, more investment and more opportunities for communities across the county, including here in Blackburn with Darwen.

“We have a strong cultural offer of our own and we know the value that culture, events and tourism can bring to local places.

“I would encourage residents, businesses and organisations to back the bid and help give Blackpool the best possible chance of success.”

Residents, businesses, partners and stakeholders are being asked to show their support by completing the online backing form before the end of the day on Friday, August 7.
