Officially the Cathedral Church of Saint Mary the Virgin with Saint Paul, Blackburn Cathedral is one of England’s newest cathedrals (consecrated 1977), yet the site has hosted Christian worship for over 1,500 years. Originating as a Georgian parish church built 1820–26, it became a cathedral with the creation of the Diocese of Blackburn in 1926. Extended in a modern Gothic style with a distinctive lantern tower and spire, it houses historic features including 15th-century misericords and a world-class Walker organ.
