The national campaign to get people shopping locally with small independent retailers is scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday 7th December. People are being encouraged to make the change from large national chains and discover the gems on their own streets with Small Business Saturday.
Blackburn and Darwen both have fantastic markets steeped in hundreds of years of tradition and boast a fantastic choice of traders. From fresh meat, fish, fruit and veg to specialist stalls selling things you simply can’t get anywhere else. With free parking in Darwen at all times and the free after 3pm deal in Blackburn (with free parking on Saturdays and Sundays), make this the the weekend you change from the supermarket to your original super markets!
Browsing the streets of both Blackburn and Darwen you can rediscover hidden gems including cafes, coffee shops and tea rooms. For instance, you could try Exchange Coffee on Fleming Square, Sprout Cafe in Heatleys Chambers on Darwen Street (voted Number 1 on Trip Advisor), Liz ‘n’ Lils near Sudell Cross or DeliCarlo on Croft Street at Darwen Market.
Both towns have a wide range of specialist retailers such as My Vintage in Darwen for vintage clothes and accessories, the Cellblock BMX off Northgate in Blackburn and Ainsworth’s Jewellers on Darwen Street in Blackburn (the longest surviving retailer in the town).
Supporting these shops keeps money local, keeps jobs local and helps to keep our town centres vibrant.
So, this Saturday, make the change and take a wander around the streets in your own town and discover what you have been missing.
There are lots more independent small businesses in our town centres. Who is your favourite independent retailer in Blackburn or Darwen?
