Gwen Sangster, manager of Darwen Market has revealed she’s also a songster as she launches a monthly programme of performances by local buskers in the three day hall.
Gwen, who now sings with Blackburn People’s Choir, was once one half of a professional folk duo. She recently had the opportunity to record a CD in a professional recording studio and will be performing a solo at the forthcoming Mayor’s Performance at Darwen Library Theatre.
She believes that providing a space for people to perform will be a great way of attracting new people into the market and creating a community hub for people to feel part of what is going on.
‘I love the idea of the market being a space where people can come and showcase their talent. This is a great opportunity for young and old to perform for a captive audience of traders and shoppers. They can invite family and friends and raise a few pounds for themselves or a good cause.
We’ve teamed up with well-known musician, Phil Knight from Clitheroe, who is working with us to coordinate the rota of performers. He has a wide network of musicians and a successful history in organising ‘open mic’ type events.’
‘Music on the Market’ is launched on the weekend of Mother’s Day, Saturday 28th March in the three day market space with free Mother’s day flower themed crafts for kids in the annexe area of the six day market.
Cllr Tom Evans, Lead Member for Regeneration, said: “It’s encouraging to see new events being piloted to help boost the market. I hope this initiative will not only help raise the profile of the market but get more people involved in community activities. Music is good for the mind and soul and I hope people will come along and support these events.”
