DVOŘÁK Cello Concerto (40)
GRIEG Symphonic Dance No.4 (11)
SIBELIUS Symphony No.5 (30)

Tabita Berglund conductor
Jakob Koranyi cello

One of an exciting new generation of conductors emerging from Scandinavia and the Baltic, Norwegian conductor Tabita Berglund has been widely praised for her positivity and “boundless energy” (The Guardian). She is joined in this Scandinavian-inspired programme by the young Swedish cellist, Jakob Koranyi, who has been described by The Strad as “a force to be reckoned with”. He takes to the stage for a performance of Dvořák’s beloved Cello Concerto, a lyrical and heart-felt memorial to his beloved sister-in-law. All of Grieg’s Symphonic Dances are heavily influenced by Norwegian folk songs with the Fourth featuring a lively wedding march that originates from Norway’s spectacular Valdres region. Sibelius’s Fifth Symphony ends with a life-affirming chorus of swinging phrases named the “Swan Hymn”, widely recognised as one of the greatest symphonic finales of all time.
