Solitaire, a long-established ladies’ fashion retailer, confirmed the news in a message to customers on social media, with owner Jenny Grogan saying she has taken the difficult decision to retire after 48 years at the helm.

The business first opened in February 1978, when Jenny and her husband David launched a small ladies’ boutique on Duckworth Street. Over the years, Solitaire grew into a destination store, later relocating to Bolton Road as its customer base expanded.

In her statement, Jenny reflected on serving three generations of families, building long-standing relationships with customers, and weathering significant challenges including three recessions and the Covid pandemic.

A shop rooted in Darwen’s changing townscape

Jenny also spoke about how Darwen itself has changed over the decades since Solitaire first opened, from its mill-town heritage to more recent regeneration and investment.

She referenced major local changes such as the redevelopment of India Mill, the arrival of new schools, and events like Darwen Live, which helped bring thousands of visitors into the town.

Despite those changes, she said one thing remained constant: the kindness, loyalty and support of Solitaire’s customers.

A deeply personal decision

The announcement also shared the personal context behind the closure. Jenny’s husband David passed away in Christmas 2018, and since then the shop had been a source of focus, strength and connection for her.

She described the decision to close as especially hard, explaining that the business had meant far more than just a place of work.

In her message, Jenny offered heartfelt thanks to customers, suppliers, and both past and present staff, acknowledging their loyalty and dedication in shaping Solitaire into what it became.

Closing-down sale now underway

As part of the closure, a closing-down sale has now begun, with all remaining stock to be sold. Customers are invited to visit the store over the coming weeks, with significant discounts available.

Solitaire has been one of Darwen’s longest-standing independent, owner-run businesses, specialising in carefully selected women’s fashion labels from across Europe and Canada, including occasionwear, everyday clothing and outfits for weddings and formal events.

End of an era for Darwen retail

The closure marks the end of a chapter not just for the business, but for Darwen’s independent retail scene. For many customers, Solitaire has been a fixture of the town for decades, associated with personal milestones, special occasions and long-standing friendships.

In her closing words, Jenny said she would take forward many happy memories and lifelong friendships made along the way, thanking everyone once again for their support.
