The three newly resurfaced and repainted tennis courts can now be booked for just £4 per hour, offering residents a fantastic way to enjoy the outdoors and stay active. Booking is simple through the new gate access system, and equipment will be available at upcoming community sessions.
The pickleball courts – a first for the borough – are also in place and will be bookable soon, giving locals the chance to try out the fast-growing sport.
The court revamp forms part of a wider series of improvements to the Grade II-listed Victorian park, backed by Blackburn with Darwen Council and the LTA Tennis Foundation. The project is part of a £30m nationwide investment to bring life back to public tennis courts across the country.
Elsewhere in the park, work is already underway to enhance facilities, including new lighting, an upgraded play area, refurbished multi-use games areas, and restoration of West Park Lodge. Future plans include a refreshed Remembrance Garden, improved accessibility, and a restored historic fountain.
Cllr Quesir Mahmood, Deputy Leader of the Council, said:
“The official opening of the new tennis and pickleball courts is an exciting next step and a welcome boost to the park. We want to make it as easy as possible for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy being active – and these high-quality courts are a brilliant way to do just that.”
The tennis court refurbishment was supported by £38,999 from the UK Government and LTA Tennis Foundation, with a further £23,403 invested by the council.
