Founded in 1903 by William Hobkirk, the Hobkirk family refer to their store as an ‘Aladdin’s cave of sewing inspiration’.
Now in the hands of Mark Hobkirk, the fourth generation of the family, the haberdashery specialist have gone from having eight stores around Lancashire in the 1980’s to owning one on Darwen Street, bought in the 1960’s. The shop is also home to the family’s sewing machine museum, opened by designer, Patrick Grant, in September 2015.
Amazingly, explains Mark, the business is dealing with the same volume of work in one store as they did with eight.
“Our repeat custom comes from us always thinking ‘what else can we do to help people?’
“We don’t just sell sewing machines. We offer a ‘try before you buy’ service, we have a plethora of experts working in-store, we have over 2,000 fabrics, and pride ourselves on having everything you need from start to finish of a haberdashery project.”
