The discount chain is currently undergoing major changes to its retail estate, aiming to reduce its total number of stores from around 800 to between 650 and 700. A total of 49 store closures have now been scheduled for August alone, with at least 68 closures expected in total.
The Blackburn store is part of the most recent wave of 12 closures to be added to Poundland’s cost-cutting plan. Other recent closures include branches in Birmingham, Coventry, Southport, Hull, and London.
Poundland’s parent company, Gordon Brothers, which acquired the chain earlier this year, described the changes as part of a “court-sanctioned restructuring and recovery plan” designed to return the business to a “financially sustainable operating model.”
Impact on Staff and Customers
Staff at the Blackburn location have been informed, and formal consultation processes are underway across all affected sites. The company says it will work to redeploy staff where possible, though many locations are expected to see redundancies.
While the Cobden Court branch has long served as a key tenant within The Mall, there are no current plans to open another Poundland in Blackburn, reflecting a national strategy of consolidation over expansion.
Nearby stores in Accrington, Preston and Burnley remain open for now.
