The brand, known for its no-frills, low-cost offerings, has been offloaded by its parent company Pepco Group to US investment firm Gordon Brothers – for the same amount it once prided itself on charging for a loaf of bread, some shampoo or a packet of batteries.
What’s happening?
Poundland – which operates over 800 stores and employs around 16,000 staff – has been struggling to keep pace with fierce competition from supermarkets and online giants like Temu and Shein. Despite being a familiar face on high streets, analysts say the brand’s appeal has faded as shoppers look elsewhere for better value and convenience.
Retail experts have blamed falling sales, failed clothing lines, and rising business costs – including National Insurance increases – for pushing Poundland into this bargain-bin deal.
What does it mean for Blackburn?
Right now, it’s unclear whether Blackburn’s Poundland store is among those at risk. The new owners are expected to begin a major shake-up, and up to 100 closures have been mentioned as part of a broader turnaround plan.
Blackburn Life has contacted Poundland for clarification on the future of its town centre location – but no confirmation has yet been given.
Why was it sold for £1?
In business terms, this kind of “nominal sale” usually means the company is struggling financially, and the seller wants to hand over the problem. Think of it like passing the baton – except this baton needs £80 million in investment to fix. That’s exactly what Gordon Brothers say they’ll be pumping into the chain in the months ahead.
What next for Poundland?
The brand will still operate under the Poundland name in the UK, and “Dealz” in Ireland and the Isle of Man. Its current boss, Barry Williams, will stay in place to lead the turnaround.
The new owners say they’re committed to keeping the brand alive, calling it an “essential retailer” that still plays a big role in serving cash-strapped communities.
But with no word yet on which stores will close, shoppers and staff in towns like Blackburn are left waiting to see what the future holds.
