The Regional Organised Crime Unit Network has highlighted an increase in this scam, urging drivers to stay vigilant. Scammers are sending fraudulent text messages, claiming recipients have an outstanding parking ticket and need to pay or face prosecution.

The text directs victims to click a link, which takes them to a fake yet convincing website resembling the official local government page, complete with accurate logos, branding, and fonts. Once there, victims are asked to provide personal and payment details.

These fraudulent texts threaten increased fines, court fees, and prosecution if payment isn’t made within 28 days.

The Council’s customer service team has received several calls from concerned residents asking if these texts are genuine. It’s important to note that local authorities do not contact individuals via text regarding parking fines. Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) are only issued in writing, and local authorities do not have access to drivers’ mobile numbers.

If you receive an unexpected text, do not click any links or provide any information. These links may contain malware, potentially leading to further harm.

If you have clicked a link or made a payment, contact your bank immediately. You can also report the incident to Action Fraud for further advice and assistance.

Stay safe and be cautious of any unsolicited messages related to parking fines.
