When the Queen visited Blackburn in 1955

As we look forward to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations this week, we’ll be taking a look back!

Just three years after Princess Elizabeth became Queen, she paid a visit to Blackburn accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh. As part of a wider tour of East Lancashire, the new Queen visited the town on 14 April 1955.

As part of the visit, she met dignitaries, inspected a guard of honour and visited Mullards factory.

These photos give a sense of the excitement of the visit and the massive crowds that tried their best to get the best vantage points, including climbing onto roofs!

All these images were provided by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council for use in the Cotton Town digitisation project: www.cottontown.org.
