Council set to recruit 26 apprentices – Here’s how to apply

Blackburn with Darwen Council’s annual apprenticeship recruitment drive is back – and this year they are set to recruit up to 26 new apprentices.

The Council is offering roles to people of all ages right across its services, with everything from an apprentice plumber to roles in our HR teams.

This year they are able to offer a variety of apprenticeship roles including in marketing, finance, highways and digital.

The work the Council does is always changing so no two days are ever the same. With more than 200 different kinds of jobs, we’re the most diverse employer in the borough.

Denise Park, Chief Executive of Blackburn with Darwen Council, said:

We believe in home-grown talent and the apprenticeship recruitment allows us to nurture staff and get the best from people whilst supporting them to develop their personal and professional skills.

Our apprenticeship recruitment has always been a huge success since we started investing in people through the scheme some years ago. Over the last few years we’ve seen an increase in the number of applications we receive.

Our apprenticeships are open to anyone over the age of 16 – and there’s no upper age limit. Over the past few years, we’ve welcomed older people who have chosen the apprenticeship route to a career change.

Successful applicants will work towards professional qualifications – ranging from Level 2 right up to degree level – with the equivalent of one day’s external training every week.

Current Finance Apprentice Jake Chippendale commented:

Through an apprenticeship you can gain a good set of people skills and communication skills working with a range of people. You‘re not just in a college classroom with other people your age. It’s very diverse here at the Council – there’s a wide variety of people, with a wide variety of skills, and you can learn a lot from working alongside them.

You can see a full description for each apprentice role over on our jobs page at www.blackburn.gov.uk/jobs.

The closing date for applications is 31 May 2022, and shortlisted applicants will hear from the council during June. After an interview process, the 26 successful applicants will then start their new apprenticeships in September.
