The closure adds to the growing list of bank branches disappearing in the area, leaving residents and businesses to contend with fewer convenient options.
As part of a nationwide trend, NatWest cites a shift toward digital banking, stating that over 80% of its customers now use online services. However, the suggestion that customers visit the town centre branch instead has sparked frustration. Many argue this fails to address the added costs and inconvenience of travel and parking, especially for those who depend on face-to-face services in Copy Nook / Audley.
The closure of the Copy Nook / Audley branch is part of NatWest’s plan to shut 53 branches across the UK in 2025, following years of widespread closures. Blackburn has already experienced similar losses, including the closure of Barclays and other banks, raising concerns about how local communities will access vital financial services.
Since 2015, over 6,000 UK bank branches have closed, with small communities like Copy Nook / Audley feeling the brunt of these decisions. Elderly residents and small businesses in the area are particularly affected, as they rely heavily on the convenience of local, in-person banking.
NatWest has defended its decision by highlighting investments in shared banking solutions, such as Post Offices and Banking Hubs, but for many in Copy Nook / Audley, this will do little to replace the convenience of a local branch.
