A thriving home for arts and entertainment in Blackburn, run with passion by volunteers.
The Blackburn Empire Theatre (formerly the Thwaites Empire Theatre) is a community-driven venue offering a wide range of live entertainment and cultural events. Opened in 2002 after a major restoration of the historic 1910 cinema building, the theatre now seats over 320 and has become a focal point for both professional and amateur performances in Blackburn.
Run mainly by volunteers, the theatre is renowned for its warm welcome, friendly atmosphere and intimate auditorium. Its programme is as diverse as its audiences, featuring touring productions, tribute acts, comedy, drama, musicals, dance, children’s shows and the ever-popular Christmas pantomime. The venue also hires out its stage and facilities to community groups, schools and performing arts organisations from across the North West.
The building began life in 1910 as the Empire Electric Theatre, one of the earliest cinemas in the UK. Over the decades it was known by many names — The Barn, The Red Brick, and later the Thwaites Empire Theatre. Thanks to a dedicated charity and the tireless work of volunteers, more than £750,000 was raised between 1997 and 2005 to restore the venue. The result is today’s Blackburn Empire Theatre, a successful mix of heritage charm and modern facilities.
The theatre is home to a vibrant mix of local groups, including Blackburn Musical Theatre Company, Blackburn Drama Club, Blackburn Gilbert & Sullivan Society, and training academies like Made for Stage. These organisations keep the stage busy all year round and help maintain the Empire’s reputation as the beating heart of Blackburn’s amateur and professional arts scene.
